A Village For A Hotel? That’s What Italy’s Alberghi Diffusi Hotels Are!
Tucked away in the scenic towns and villages or Borghi in Italy, are a few sustainable hotels – the Albergo Diffuso model – that are luring travellers and backpackers from around the world. What is it, you ask? Albergo Diffuso or a dispersed hotel was first thought of and executed by Giancarlo Dall’Ara, a marketing consultant. The idea was to drive more footfalls, and consequently, money, into local tourism. Bringing life back to the historic towns, this model basically turns unused houses and rooms into a hotel instead of building one. Thus, the model becomes extremely cost-effective, giving tourists the taste of the local culture and a chance to live in quaint houses and mansions, which wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. The idea is to not build something new but to reuse, making it quite a sustainable approach. To qualify to become an Albergo Diffuso, the hotel must use the existing architecture. It also has common areas for guests to check in or having breakfasts and dinner. Interestingly, the living room is the piazza — a public square or a marketplace!
